A Fluid Delicasy

Marcin Wasilewski Trio

One of the downfalls of spending so much of my time in places like Congo and Costa Rica is that I don’t get to see music like THIS. EVER. We flew into Amsterdam early Wednesday morning and spent two days there on our way from Congo to Costa Rica. After a long nap, a coffee at Back to Black, and a viewing of the Banksy exhibit at MOCO, we decided we wanted to hear some jazz. On the spur of the moment, we bought we tickets to see this trio play at Bimhuis (pronounced beam house) just a couple of hours before the show was set to start. We had never heard of them, we just knew we wanted to see jazz. And now. We arrived four minutes late, and as would be expected when seeing a jazz show in Europe, the band was already well into their first song. Within seconds I was thanking my lucky stars that we happened upon the Marcin Wasilewski Trio. It has been a long time since I have seen music this good. The trio hales from Poland and consists of a pianist (Marcin), upright bassist and drummer. I read later that the band has been playing together for over 20 years and it shows. The music was so delicate and so fluid, like it was truly coming from one organism.

This is a video of them I snagged from their YouTube feed. They are playing an original called Spark of Life. This was the song they were playing as we walked in. It immediately drew me in and I am sure it will do the same for you.
