Sailing Honeymoon: the Ups and Downs

sailing honeymoon, crystal stafford

We spent three days on this beautiful monohull, the Mica Male, sailing the turquoise waters of the San Blas Islands on our honeymoon. Our BIG DREAM is to circumnavigate the globe on a sailboat. Until this point, we had only sailed catamarans. This time we wanted a taste of the monohull life. We found the beautiful Mica Male through a company called I Travel by Boat.

Sailing Honeymoon: Just you and your husband… and the guys

The ups of a sailing honeymoon are obvious: beautiful beaches, romantic sunsets, falling asleep in each other’s arms while listening to the sea lapping the hull. The downside is you never know who you will be spending your time with once on board.

We chartered a catamaran in Madagascar a few years ago and it was one of the most romantic journeys EVER. Our captain and chef caught fish and prepared delicious meals for us to enjoy… just the two of us. Our encounter onboard the mic was a little different.

Two Italian brothers in their late sixties were the captain and skipper of our boat. The moment I saw the words “Italian food” in the description for the Mic I was sold. But I wasn’t prepared to spend so much time with these sweet fellas.

We shared every meal with our friendly captain and chef.

I was also not prepared to fall asleep alone in my cabin while my new husband drank wine and smoked cigars with the two ancient bachelors manning our ship.

I soon had to let go of the romantic notions I had for our time onboard the Mic. Instead, I developed a new story for my honeymoon: connecting with wonderful human beings while sailing the Carribean. Life doesn’t get any better than that really.

I will be posting photos over the next few days so check back soon for more tropical island inspiration.
